What is shaimos?
Shaimos is old Sefarim, torn pages of your used Chumashim, water-damaged Mezuzahs, etc.
For more detail please see Shaimos Guidelines.
How do you dispose of shaimos?
Orthodox Jewish law does not permit holy articles to be simply discarded when
they aren't usable anymore. Tradition demands that they be buried respectably.
You may do any of the following:
- Bury the shaimos in your back yard.
- Take your shaimos to a funeral a drop your bag of shaimos in the grave.
I would discuss this with the officiating rabbi for permission.
- Check out the
Lower Merion Synagogue Website
around Pesach time.
They will have a truck pickup for shaimos around that time.
- You may ship your shaimos to Beth Genizah Olam USA.
Check out their website for details.
